For Brunello lovers and collectors, this is the vintage to buy. 2019 was an incredible vintage that is being compared to 2016, 2015, 2010 and 2006. This exceptional vintage from our favorite cult-producer comes from 3 estate vineyards: Sorgente, Piaggione and Teatro. The wine is aged for 40 months in barrel + 12 months in bottles.

Biodynamic farming practices, hand-harvested, native yeast fermentation, no fining or filtering and only 625 cases produced.

Podere Salicutti is a pioneering force in Tuscany’s Montalcino region. They were the first estate in the region to gain organic certification, and shortly after, began paving the way for aspiring biodynamic farmers as well. The winery was founded by Francesco Leanza back in 1990, and today, is operated by Felix and Sabine Eichbauer. The estate comprises 11 hectares, of which just 4.5 are dedicated to vines. All fruit at Salicutti is hand harvested, sorted in the vineyard, and fermented in open-top stainless steel containers with native yeasts. Aging begins in neutral French toneaux and eventually finishes in larger oak casks.

Salicutti wines are known for their elegance, transparency, and traditional flavor profiles. A mere 2,500 cases of their wines are produced annually, making them some of the most sought after bottles of Brunello on the market. We are so lucky to work with these small-batch wines that truly reflect their unique sense of place. Despite their drinkability in their youth, the wines are most definitely able to withstand the test of times – so if possible, we recommend grabbing a few of these coveted bottles when possible!

Brunello di Montalcino is one of Italy’s most esteemed red wines, renowned for its quality, longevity, and distinctive character. It hails from the Montalcino region in Tuscany, Italy, situated about 70 miles southwest of Florence.

Here are some key characteristics and aspects of Brunello di Montalcino:

Grape Variety: Brunello di Montalcino is made from 100% Sangiovese grosso grapes, a clone of the Sangiovese variety that thrives in the region’s unique terroir.

Terroir: The Montalcino region has a warm and dry climate, with vineyards planted on hillsides at varying altitudes. The diverse soils, which include limestone, clay, and schist, contribute to the wine’s complexity and character.

Winemaking: Brunello di Montalcino is known for its traditional winemaking methods. The grapes undergo a lengthy maceration and fermentation period, followed by aging in large oak casks for a minimum of two years, with additional bottle aging required before release.

Flavor Profile: Brunello di Montalcino typically exhibits a deep ruby color and complex aromas of ripe red fruits, floral notes, earth, leather, and spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied with firm tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, lingering finish.

Aging Potential: Brunello di Montalcino is known for its exceptional aging potential. While it can be enjoyed in its youth, the wine truly shines with aging, evolving and developing greater complexity and nuance over time. Well-made Brunellos can age for decades, with some reaching their peak after 10-20 years or more. Some great recent vintages include 2019, 2016, 2015, 2010 and 2006.

Food Pairing: Brunello di Montalcino pairs wonderfully with a variety of Tuscan dishes, including hearty pasta dishes, grilled meats, game, and aged cheeses. Its robust structure and nuanced flavors make it a versatile companion to a wide range of cuisine.

How to Serve: While not always necessary, decanting Brunello di Montalcino can help to aerate the wine and allow its aromas and flavors to fully develop. Especially for younger vintages. Decanting for 1-2 hours before serving can enhance the wine’s characteristics. Brunello di Montalcino is best enjoyed between 60-65°F in a glass with a large bowl and tapered rim, such as a Bordeaux or Burgundy glass. Avoid using glasses with narrow openings, as they can restrict the wine’s bouquet.
