Ernest Vineyards was founded in 2012 to craft wines of integrity and restraint from the cool, maritime vineyards hugging the Pacific Ocean in Sonoma County, the newly anointed West Sonoma Coast AVA. Our focus is on small-lot Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that offer a sense of place and purpose. Beyond our commitment to integrity, restraint, and beauty, we are most passionately committed to sourcing our varietals from carefully selected vineyards, specializing in site-specific wines. Some sites are valley floor, some are on hillsides. Some face west, all are considered cold-climate. We work diligently to dial-in the farming to adhere to a style that maximizes flavor ripeness while keeping sugars down and acidity high. The result: Wines that are pure expressions of the sites from which they came. Pure Sonoma Coast.

A desire to explore alternative varietals in California and further educate ourselves on winemaking techniques led to the beginning of our second label, Edaphos (The Greek word meaning soil or dirt) in 2014. We consider this part of our business to be our “laboratory,” the place where we make wines that incorporate new and exciting approaches to winemaking with different styles and off-beat grape varietals. At a total of less than seven thousand cases annually, Ernest Vineyards remains a small company and the team of eight are involved daily in sharing their story, wines, and continued mission, to further beauty.

GRENACHE
Known as Grenache, or Garnacha (in Spain), this hot-climate grape vine can produce high-intensity, high-alcohol, flavorful medium-bodied red wines. Thinner skinned and low in tannin, Grenache is staple grape for not only producing red wine, but also Rosé. Ever hear of a “GSM” blend? Grenache, while lovely on its own, is a great partner to blend with Syrah, it’s bigger and bolder friend, as well as Mourvèdre. Mostly grown throughout Spain and in Southern France, particularly the Southern Rhône, Grenache is becoming increasingly popular in other hotter-climate regions. A go-to glass of wine for the end of a long work day!

SONOMA COAST, CALIFORNIA
Unknown to many, Sonoma County located in Northern California is actually bigger than its neighbor, Napa County. Sonoma has a famous gap region, known as the Petaluma Gap, that provides a break in the the coastal ranges and is Sonoma County’s newest AVA. The “Gap” is actually a wind gap named after a coastal mountain opening that stretches east from the Pacific Ocean to the south of the San Pablo Bay. Closest to the Sonoma Coast is the famous Russian River Valley AVA known for its high-quality, elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. To the north of the Russian River lies the warmer Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley AVA’s producing a wide range of grape varieties including excellent Zinfandels, Sauvignon Blanc, Rhône varietals (Syrah, Grenache, etc), and Cabernet Sauvignon. Other vineyard areas to watch out for premium wine are Sonoma Coast AVA, Anderson Valley, and Mendocino County.
