Classic in Style

Les Charmes is one of the largest and most recognized premiers crus in Meursault. Wines from this site are known for their rich, honeyed, and nutty flavor profiles. This expression is certainly rich and palate coating, yet the signature PYCM reductive and acid-driven touch keeps the wine unbelievably balanced.

Sustainable farming practices, native yeast fermentation, unfined and unfiltered.

Pierre-Yves Colin is one of Burgundy’s most highly regarded winemakers. After working at his father’s domaine for 11 years, Pierre-Yves established his own winery from inherited vines back in 2005. Since then, he has become a benchmark producer of white wines from the Côte de Beaune. All of his white wines are whole bunch pressed, spontaneously fermented, and aged for up to 18 months sur-lie in oak barrels with no batonnage (lees stirring). All wines are bottled unfiltered.

Pierre-Yves currently farms vines across some of Burgundy’s most beloved appellations, from Chassagne-Montrachet to Saint-Aubin and beyond. Nearly 20 years in, Pierre-Yves’ wines continue to get better and better (and more in demand) with every vintage. PYCM wines are known for their pleasantly reductive nature, mineral-driven flavor profiles, and serious ability to age – that is, if you have the patience to wait.

2019 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault ‘Charmes’ Premier Cru: Tasting Notes

A Burgundian Chardonnay will express along a spectrum of tasting notes, ranging from crisp and fruit-forward to bready and buttery with a spice-driven oeuvre. Peculiar vinification practices of sub-regions, villages, climats, and even individual winemakers  alchemically transform the constant green varietal into a unique showcase of terroir and tradition, both setting apart each bottle produced and firmly planting it within the Chardonnay genre.

A really recognizable Chardonnay leans into the baked-good side of things, and owes its warmer flavor profile to time spent aging in oak barrels. These typically age well, and can be enjoyed 10 – 20 years after their initial bottling. Springier Chards – those fermented in concrete or steel – should be had young, when the drinker can best appreciate the nuance of floral and fruity notes they provide.

The 2019 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault ‘Charmes’ Premier Cru sits somewhere at the center between the two extremes of the Chard experience. It’s an oaked white, which gives it a rich texture and palate straight out of a boulangerie, but maintains an acidity and a balance of flavor that at once challenges, delights, and intrigues.

2019 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault ‘Charmes’ Premier Cru: Region & Vineyard

Bourgogne, or Burgundy, from which the 2019 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault ‘Charmes’ Premier Cru hails, holds a historic place within the French viticultural pantheon. Ancient cultures as far back as 600 BCE may have been farming wine grapes in these lime-rich soils, laying the foundations for the contemporary edition of this icon in the world of wines.

The Meursault appellation, existing within the Cote de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy, reflects the preferences of the greater region with a preference towards Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals. White Meursault wines are almost always oaked, and express butter as a primary note within the broader palate.

One of many Premier Cru vineyards in Meursault, Charmes sits on thin, calcareous soil where the growing plants enjoy optimum sunlight and excellent drainage, resulting in smaller, denser, and more flavorful uvae which ultimately metamorphose into a better wine.
