Third generation winemaker, Emmerich Knoll, is one of Austria`s leading producers and runs the family winery along with his wife, Anja. Since their business launched in the 1950s, there has hardly been another winery who has shaped Wachau as a serious, high-quality wine-growing region as strongly as that of the Knoll family. The Knolls have holdings in all the best sites, as exemplified by their success in the now infamous UK tasting where an aged Knoll Grüner beat a field of Grand Cru white Burgundies. The entire Wachau region was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, recognizing that the “architecture, the human settlements, and the agricultural use of the land in the Wachau vividly illustrate a basically medieval landscape which has evolved organically and harmoniously over time”, according to the official inscription.

While in the Wachau, one can also dine at the family’s acclaimed, 400 year old restaurant, Loibnerhof Familie Knoll.

GRUNER VELTLINER
The flagship grape of Austria, Grüner Veltliner is a natural cross of Traminer and St. Georgen. Grüner accounts for almost 30% of all grapes planted in the country and has become a favorite amongst sommeliers worldwide because of its food-friendliness due to its high acidity. These fruity, herbaceous, and peppery wines are ultra charming and delightful. Grüner Veltliner can be enjoyed throughout your meal or while lounging on your porch as a spring sipper. Drink while the bloom of youth is still on it!

AUSTRIA
A country best known for high-quality, dry, white wines including its very own grape variety Grüner Veltliner, and Riesling. However, Austria also has many fine red wines from local varieties including Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch and sweet dessert wine. Due to the Alps covering most of western Austria, the wine-producing areas tend to be found on the lower and eastern end of the country. With little variation in weather being in northern Europe, Austrian wine-producing regions have a cool continental climate experiencing short summers and harsh winters.
