- Table Talk Val de Meigas comes from the spanish word, "meigas" or witches. Legend has it, these magical figures have inhabited the entire valley of Galicia AKA "Terra Meiga" (Witching Land).
Val de Meigas is the personal project of Rebeca Barral from the Salnés valley of Galicia’s Rías Baixas! Rebeca’s family has been established for generations in the town of Ribadumia in the heart of the Salnés valley. Salnés is the oldest and most coastal of the Rías Baixas appellation’s recognized subzones, and is generally believed to the be the genetic birthplace of the Albariño variety. Rebeca’s family has been producing wine since 1983, but it wasn’t until 2015 that Rebeca decided to start her own project, sourced from select parcels of her family’s holdings. Since then, Rebeca has fine-tuned her winemaking to express her preferred style by utilizing sustainable and ecologically friendly farming practices, natural yeasts, avoiding skin contact and extended lees aging. The result is a pure, light, and mineral-driven style of this oceanic refreshment.
Val de Meigas comes from the spanish word, “meigas” or witches. The meigas, legend has it, are magical figures full of power that inhabit the entire valley and their meaning is closely related to Galician culture and tradition. These figures, full of magic, have inspired the Rebeca to make a wine that evokes tradition, mystery and the supernatural. A wine that imbues those who taste it with Galician culture and tradition, making them part of the magic of this land.
“Our vision is to create a wine of excellent quality that transmits the culture and traditions of Galicia and carries the magic from our land to all corners of the world.”
ALBARINO
A pleasantly refreshing light white wine. Most known from Rias Baixas in Spain, but additionally as Vinho Verde in Portugal. Albariño’s are generally high in acid with refreshing citrus fruit flavors and a notably saline mineral character due to the regions’ proximity to the ocean. Serve these wines well-chilled while eating fish tacos or salty cheeses, you won’t be disappointed.
GALICIA, SPAIN
Part of what can be referred to as “Green” Spain, Galicia is located in the upper north west corner of the country. Wine production here dates back to the time of the Romans. It is one of the coolest winegrowing regions in the country, producing refreshingly crisp Albariño with strong mineral characteristics as well as elegant red wine from the Mencía grape. Galicia boasts five denominated wine regions (DOs) including the infamous Rías Baixas, the closest DO to the Atlantic ocean. Salnés Valley is where the largest area of vineyards and wineries of the Rías Baixas DO are concentrated. It is the oldest and most coastal of the subzones and is actually said to be the genetic birthplace of the grape Albariño grape. No wonder the grape dominates in excellence here.
