Peay Vineyards: A Story of Family, Frontier, and Place
Some of California's most remarkable wines come from places that most people would never think to plant a vineyard. Peay Vineyards is one of those places.
In the mid-1990s, siblings Andy and Nick Peay, along with Nick's wife, Vanessa Wong, set out in search of land that could produce wines with freshness, complexity, and a true sense of place. Their journey took them up and down the West Coast, studying climate maps, soil types, and weather patterns in pursuit of a cooler, more coastal site for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah.
They eventually discovered a remote ridge in the far northwestern corner of the West Sonoma Coast, just four miles from the Pacific Ocean. At the time, the property was considered too cold, too foggy, and too isolated for grape growing. To the Peay family, it was exactly what they had been searching for.
Today, Peay Vineyards is a first-generation, family-owned winery where every aspect of the business remains deeply personal. Vanessa Wong and Nick Peay oversee the farming and winemaking, while Andy Peay manages the business and shares the wines with the world. Together, they have transformed this rugged, coastal site into one of California's most respected cool-climate estates.
Their 53-acre hilltop vineyard is planted primarily to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah, along with small amounts of Viognier, Roussanne, and Marsanne. Farming is certified organic and guided by a long-term commitment to the health of the land. The estate is also certified Fish Friendly, practices integrated pest management, utilizes biodiesel at the vineyard, and relies on solar power to minimize its environmental impact.
Production remains intentionally small, with some wines made in quantities of fewer than 100 cases. Every bottle reflects the wild beauty of the West Sonoma Coast—cool Pacific breezes, lingering fog, and a growing season that allows the wines to develop exceptional balance, energy, and complexity.
At its heart, Peay Vineyards is a story of curiosity, perseverance, and a family's belief that extraordinary wines come from extraordinary places. Their wines are more than an expression of grape variety; they are a reflection of the people, landscape, and adventurous spirit that brought this remarkable vineyard to life.
