A Sancerre rosé for long lunches and warm evenings outside.
Isabelle Garrault is the tenth generation of her family to grow grapes and make wine in Sancerre. She works from Verdigny, a small hamlet in the appellation, where her vineyards climb steep slopes. Les Grands Monts is the name she uses for her white, her red and this rosé.
The rosé is 100% Pinot Noir from vines more than 30 years old in Verdigny and Sury-en-Vaux. They grow on caillottes, the stony, shattered limestone that gives Sancerre its chalky bite. The grapes are picked by hand and pressed right away instead of soaking on their skins, then fermented with native yeasts and aged in stainless steel. Look for cherry, raspberry and strawberry, a twist of grapefruit and orange zest, dried pink flowers and a stony finish.
Pour it with oysters, a lobster roll, fresh goat cheese or a Niçoise salad. Serve it well chilled, around 48–50°F. No decanting needed.
Our guide to Pinot Noir covers the grape behind this pink wine, and our rosé wines collection has more bottles to pour all year.
