2024 Weingut Bründlmayer Zweigelt Rosé
A dry rosé for anyone ready to look beyond Provence, made from Zweigelt, Austria's most widely planted red grape.
Willi Bründlmayer runs his family's estate in Lower Austria with his wife Edwige, Thomas Klinger and Master of Wine Andreas Wickhoff. In 2009, Wine & Spirits Magazine called him "the best Austrian winemaker of the last 25 years." The family stopped using synthetic fertilizers in 1979, and the vineyards are now certified organic by LACON.
The vines grow on loess at 260 to 380 meters. The grapes are picked by hand at moderate ripeness and pressed gently as whole clusters, with a splash of free-run juice from their Zweigelt Reserve fruit. It ferments and rests in stainless steel in a gravity-flow cellar that runs partly on solar power. At 12% alcohol, it shows cherry, wild strawberry and violets, a little savory spice, wet stone and a silky texture.
Drink it with schnitzel and a squeeze of lemon, smoked trout on rye, or a margherita pizza. Serve it chilled, around 46–50°F, and enjoy it by 2027.
