The 2021 Ad Ripa “RSW” is a beautifully restrained, old-school expression of California Cabernet Sauvignon from winemaker Justin Willett, best known for Tyler Winery. Sourced from a remarkable parcel of Happy Canyon Vineyard, this is Cabernet built around freshness, minerality and structure rather than sheer power.
The fruit comes entirely from Block 8, an extremely steep, west-facing slope planted in 2001 with cuttings originating from Napa Valley’s legendary To Kalon Vineyard. The old, head-trained vines grow in rocky river-cobble soils, producing a Cabernet with remarkable concentration while maintaining the energy and savory character that define Happy Canyon.
Bright red and black fruit lead into layers of crushed rock, mint, tobacco, white pepper and turned earth. The palate is silky yet structured, with fine, persistent tannins and a distinctly mineral backbone. There is plenty of depth here, but the wine remains lifted and precise—more reminiscent of classic California Cabernet than the richer, more extracted style often associated with the variety.
“RSW” is named in honor of Justin Willett’s late father, Rory Steven Willett.
