Out where the Sacramento River meets the Delta, in deep, windswept sand, sits one of California's great historic vineyards. Evangelho was planted in the 1890s, and because phylloxera can't survive in sand, many of those original vines still grow on their own roots more than a century later. Bedrock Wine Co., led by Morgan Twain-Peterson MW, now farms the site and bottles this “Heritage” wine as a true field blend: everything picked and fermented together, just as the vineyard was planted.
The 2023 is 78% Zinfandel and 16% Mourvèdre, with the last 6% a mix of Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir, Palomino, and a single Clairette Blanche vine. It was fermented with native yeasts in open-top tanks and aged 11 months in large neutral oak. Expect bright raspberry and cherry, blood orange, violet and lavender, with cracked pepper and spice underneath. It's lifted and fresh rather than heavy, with fine-grained tannins and a long finish.
Pour it with burgers, braised short ribs, charcuterie, or a rich pasta.
Own-rooted 1890s vines, practicing organic farming, native yeast fermentation.
