This is Châteauneuf-du-Pape for a slow Sunday dinner, when the roast has been in the oven since lunch.
Clos des Brusquières is a small, old-school estate run by the Courtil family, who have grown grapes for five generations. Claude Courtil has run it since 1969 with his wife Nanou and their sons David and Jérôme. They make one wine. No special cuvées, no white.
The name comes from Les Brusquières, a parcel in the northwest of the appellation. Grenache does most of the work, blended with Syrah, Mourvèdre and other traditional Châteauneuf grapes, from vines that average about 70 years old. The family farms sustainably, ferments with native yeasts and ages the wine in concrete and old casks. Expect black currant, blackberry and cherry compote, then dried herbs, potpourri, a smoky mesquite edge and meaty tannins.
Pour it with smoked brisket, roast chicken with garlic and thyme, or mushroom ragù over pappardelle. It will keep until 2040. If you open it now, decant it for an hour and serve it around 60–65°F.
New to the grape? Our guide to Grenache explains why it rules the southern Rhône, and our red wines collection has more bottles like this one.
