There is a moment, right after you pour this, when someone at the table says “oh, that’s lovely” before they can even explain why. That is Chiroubles. It sits at the top of the Beaujolais hills, higher than any of the other crus, and the wines it makes are the most delicate and floral of the bunch. Gamay grown up here does not shout. It charms.
This one comes from the Mélinand family, who have farmed in Beaujolais since 1970. Mathieu Mélinand took over from his father Jean-Jacques and farms the estate organically. “Aux Côtes” is his single vineyard bottling from a steep slope of granite and stone, where some of the vines are past 60 years old. That age is the secret. Old vines dig deep and give you concentration without weight, which is exactly what you taste here.
Expect fresh raspberry and cherry, a lift of violet and lilac, and a cool mineral streak that the pros like to call crushed stone. The tannins are soft and velvety, the acidity keeps everything bright, and the finish leaves a whisper of sweet spice. It is medium bodied, genuinely refreshing, and one of the rare reds you can put a slight chill on and love even more.
Pour it with roast chicken, a good margherita pizza, a plate of charcuterie, or anything a little spicy. Honestly, it is just as happy on a Tuesday as it is at a dinner party. That is the whole point of a wine like this. It brings people to the table and makes the night feel easy.
We love this one. You will too.
