Wine Clubs in Orange County: How to Pick One
Wine clubs in Orange County come in more shapes than the name suggests. Some ship the same box to everyone. Some are a shop's way of keeping its regulars close. Some are mostly about the people you drink with. Picking well comes down to a handful of plain questions, and that's what this guide is for.
We run one of these clubs, so we'll tell you where we fit and where we don't. The seven questions below work on any club, ours included.
What is a wine club, exactly?
A wine club is a membership that gets you wine chosen for you, plus some mix of perks: member events, a person to ask, special access to bottles, and often regular shipments or pickups. You pay to belong, and in return someone with a good palate does the choosing.
How is that different from a wine subscription box? A box is wine on a schedule. It shows up, you open it, and that's the deal. A club adds access: events, people who learn what you like, and bottles you won't find on a grocery shelf. Some clubs are mostly box and some are mostly community. Most sit somewhere in between. If you want the mechanics in detail, we wrote a separate piece on how a wine club works.
The four kinds of wine clubs you will find in Orange County
- Winery clubs. One producer ships you its own wines a few times a year. This is a great fit if you already love that producer. The trade-off is that every bottle comes from one place.
- Shop clubs. A retailer picks bottles for you, often with pickup so you can talk to the staff. You get range and someone who knows the shelves. It suits people who like to ask questions. If a shop is what you're after, start with our guide to the best independent wine shops in Orange County.
- Mail-order subscription boxes. Wine arrives on a schedule, with very little effort on your end. It suits someone who wants bottles to appear and doesn't need the story behind each one.
- Community and society-style groups. Dues, regular tastings, a standing group of people to pour with. It suits anyone who wants company more than a case count.
None of these is the right answer for everybody. The right one depends on how much you want to be told what to drink, and how much you want to show up in person.
Seven questions to ask before you join a wine club
- Who picks the wine, and can you tell them what you don't like? A club that listens to you is worth more than one with a famous name on the label.
- Do you have to take a shipment, or can you opt out? Some clubs lock you into every box. Others let you skip. Know which one you're signing up for.
- What does it cost, and is everything included? Ask about shipping, tax and event fees. A low monthly number can hide a lot.
- Can you cancel without a fee or a fight? You should be able to leave as easily as you joined.
- Where does the wine go? Pickup, local delivery and shipping are three different experiences, with different costs and different timing.
- What do members get beyond bottles? Events, a concierge, early access to small releases. If the answer is "a discount," keep asking.
- Can you try the place first? A club you can visit, or at least meet in person, is easier to trust than one you only know from a website.
Write the answers down for two or three clubs and the choice usually makes itself.
Pickup, delivery and shipping: what changes when you live in OC
The real advantage of a local club is the room. You can meet the person who picked your wine, taste with them, and tell them what you loved and what you didn't. A box on the porch can't ask you that.
Be honest with yourself about the drive, too. Southern California traffic is its own variable. Whether you're searching for a wine club in Los Angeles or in Orange County, count the miles to the place that hosts the events. A club with gatherings you can't get to is a club you'll stop using.
And if you'd rather the wine come to you? We ship wine to most U.S. states, but not to Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Mississippi or Utah. Someone 21 or older needs to be there to sign for every wine delivery.
A wine club in Costa Mesa: what Club Argaux members get
If you want a wine club in Costa Mesa, Club Argaux is ours. It's built around sommelier-guided access to small-production wines, member-only events, and a person who knows your palate. There are three memberships, and this is what each one costs:
| Membership | Price | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Private Client | $20 a month or $200 a year | For the curious wine lover who wants expert guidance and access without a recurring shipment. It has no wine discount and no wine shipment. Standard shipping rates apply to wine purchases. |
| 6-Bottle Quarterly | $294 a quarter, shipping included | Everything in Private Client, plus six bottles every quarter, curated seasonally by our sommeliers. Choose the curated mixed box or pick your own bottles for each shipment, with priority access to limited wines. |
| Corporate | $950 a year | Designed for businesses that use wine to look after clients and teams. |
Do the math on the Quarterly plan and it comes to $49 a bottle on average, with shipping already in the price. We ship wine to most U.S. states, but not to Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Mississippi or Utah. Someone 21 or older needs to be there to sign for every wine delivery.
Every plan includes member-only wines and events, an annual tasting, preferred event pricing, and a wine concierge, which is a trusted sommelier in your back pocket. And the line we like best on the page: "No commitments — free cancellation at any time."
Where we're not the right fit: if you want a new box every month at the lowest possible price per bottle, a mail-order subscription will probably do that better. We'd rather you know that now.
Visit the club: member events at our Costa Mesa venue
Our home base is a tasting room at 3190-A Airport Loop Drive, Costa Mesa, CA 92626. It's open Monday to Friday, by appointment only, so call (949) 438-7228 before you drive over. It isn't a walk-in shop.
Our Costa Mesa venue is where members meet. Members get priority access and invitations to member tastings, private dinners and special events there through the year. It's also where we hold a wine class once a month. Each is two hours on a weeknight evening, with one theme and thirty seats, and no wine knowledge is required. You don't have to be a member to book a class. Dates and tickets live on our upcoming events page.
Think of the class as the test drive. Come once, taste with us, and see whether the room feels like yours.
Which wine club fits you?
You want guidance, not a box on your doorstep. Start with the Private Client membership. You get the concierge, the events and the member-only wines. Buy bottles when you want them. Nothing arrives on a schedule.
You want a quarterly box and a seat at the table. The 6-Bottle Quarterly is built for that. Six bottles every quarter, a say in what goes in the box, and everything Private Client members get.
You run a team or a business. Corporate Membership is $950 a year and was designed for client and team relationships. The membership page lays out what it covers, and you can ask us about it directly.
Wine clubs in Orange County: common questions
What is the difference between a wine club and a wine subscription?
A subscription sends wine on a schedule. A club adds access: events, people who learn your taste, and a say in what you get.
How much does a wine club cost?
It depends on whether shipments are included. At Club Argaux, Private Client is $20 a month or $200 a year with no recurring shipment. The 6-Bottle Quarterly is $294 a quarter with shipping included. Corporate is $950 a year.
Can I cancel a wine club anytime?
At Club Argaux, yes. Our membership page promises "No commitments — free cancellation at any time." Ask any club you're considering to say the same thing in writing.
Does Club Argaux ship wine?
We ship wine to most U.S. states, but not to Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Mississippi or Utah. Someone 21 or older needs to be there to sign for every wine delivery.
Can I try Argaux before I join?
Yes. Our Costa Mesa tasting room is open Monday to Friday by appointment, and we hold a wine class there once a month that anyone can book. Tickets are on the events calendar.
Wherever you land, pick the club you'll really use, not the one with the longest list of perks. If Costa Mesa is close to you, take a look at our Club Argaux membership plans and ask us anything.
