How a Wine Club Works: Types, Costs and What to Look For

A wine club is a membership with a wine seller: curated bottles on a schedule, member-only wines, member pricing or events. Most are shipment clubs, access memberships or subscription boxes. Costs run from a small monthly fee to a few hundred dollars a shipment. Before you join, check who picks the wine and whether you can cancel.

What is a wine club?

A wine club is a way to buy wine through someone who knows more about it than the label does. You join, pay a fee or a set price, and get something back: bottles picked for you, access to wines you can't buy off the shelf, a discount, an invitation to a tasting, or a person you can ask when you can't decide.

You'll see the same idea under other names: wine membership, wine subscription, wine of the month club. Clubs that say "monthly" or "wine of the month" send a shipment every month. The shipment plan at Club Argaux is quarterly, so don't expect a box every four weeks.

Wine club vs. wine subscription box

The two get mixed up all the time, and the difference matters when you're deciding where to put your money. A subscription box is a product on a calendar. A club is a relationship with a seller. Here's how to tell them apart:

  • Who picks the wine. A box often runs on a quiz or an algorithm. A club should name the person who tasted the bottles.
  • Whether you can change it. Boxes are usually fixed. A good club lets you swap, skip or choose your own bottles.
  • Whether there's a person or a place. Look for someone you can ask and a room where you can taste, not just a support inbox.
  • What you pay, and when. Some charge every month, some every quarter, some a flat membership fee with nothing shipped at all.

If you're curious about the natural-wine corner of this world, we wrote a separate buyer's checklist for a natural wine subscription.

How does a wine club work?

Most clubs follow the same path, with a few details that change from club to club:

  1. Pick a membership. You choose a plan and a billing cycle: monthly, quarterly, yearly or per shipment.
  2. The wine gets chosen. Either the club's sommeliers curate it for you, or you pick your own bottles from a members' list.
  3. Wine ships or waits for you. Some clubs ship on a schedule. Others hold your allocation for pickup or let you order whenever you like.
  4. You're billed on a cycle. The charge repeats every period, so check the billing date before you sign up.
  5. You use the perks. That might mean member pricing, early access to limited bottles, events, tastings or a concierge.
  6. You pause or cancel. This is where clubs differ most. Read the cancel terms before you pay, not after.

Further down, we'll show how this works at Club Argaux.

Types of wine club memberships

Shipment clubs

Wine arrives on a schedule, usually every month or every quarter. You get the convenience of someone else choosing, and the tradeoff is that a box shows up whether or not you're in the mood. The better ones let you skip a shipment or swap bottles.

Access memberships

You pay a fee for member-only wines, events and advice, and nothing is required to ship. These suit people who like to buy a bottle when they feel like it and want first dibs on the good stuff. Our Private Client membership is this kind.

Subscription boxes

A fixed box on a fixed calendar, often matched to a quiz. They're simple and predictable. They also tend to have the least flexibility and the least conversation.

Corporate and business memberships

Built for companies that gift wine, host clients or reward teams. Expect a larger fee, member savings and some help with tastings or branding.

How much does a wine club membership cost?

A few things drive the price:

  • Bottles per shipment. Four bottles and twelve bottles are very different commitments.
  • How often. Monthly adds up faster than quarterly.
  • Curated or self-selected. Picking your own can cost more, or less, depending on the club.
  • Shipping. Some clubs include it. Some add it at checkout.
  • Member discounts. Worth having only if you'd buy the wine anyway.

The fairest way to compare any club is per bottle. Take the price of the shipment, add shipping if it isn't included, and divide by the number of bottles. A $150 shipment of six bottles with $20 shipping is $170, or about $28 a bottle. Do that math before you decide anything else.

Here's what Club Argaux's three plans cost:

  • Private Client: $20 a month or $200 a year. No recurring shipment and no wine discount.
  • 6-Bottle Quarterly: $294 a quarter, shipping included. Six bottles in each of four shipments a year, which works out to $49 a bottle on average. We ship wine to most U.S. states, but not to Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Mississippi or Utah. Someone 21 or older needs to be there to sign for every wine delivery.
  • Corporate: $950 a year, with 15% member savings on wine purchases.

What to look for in a wine club

Seven questions will tell you almost everything. Ask them of any club, ours included.

1. Who picks the wine? Look for a real person with a name and a palate, not just "our experts."

2. Can you see where the wine comes from? Look for producer names, regions and farming practices on every bottle. If the club can't tell you who made it, keep walking.

3. How flexible is it? Look for the ability to skip, pause or cancel without a phone call or a penalty.

4. What's the real cost per bottle? Look for the total price, shipping included, divided by the number of bottles.

5. Where does it ship? A good club tells you plainly before you pay. Here's ours: "We ship wine to most U.S. states, but not to Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Mississippi or Utah. Someone 21 or older needs to be there to sign for every wine delivery."

6. Is there a place and a community? Look for events you can actually attend, with real people who share your interest.

7. Is there someone you can ask? Look for a concierge, sommelier or tasting-room team who will answer a question like "what goes with short ribs?" without a script.

How Club Argaux membership works

A Club Argaux wine club membership comes in three plans, and each one includes sommelier-guided access to exclusive wines, member-only events and a wine concierge.

Private Client is for the curious wine lover who wants guidance and access without a recurring shipment. You get member-only wines and exclusive events, the wine concierge, an annual tasting, preferred event pricing and access to limited wine allocations. Standard rates apply to wine purchases.

6-Bottle Quarterly is our most popular plan. You get everything in Private Client, plus priority access to limited wines and four curated, sommelier-selected shipments a year, six bottles each. For every shipment you can take our curated mixed box or choose your own bottles. Shipping is included. We're a California wine club based in Costa Mesa. We ship wine to most U.S. states, but not to Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Mississippi or Utah. Someone 21 or older needs to be there to sign for every wine delivery.

Corporate is built for businesses that use wine to look after clients and teams. It includes 15% member savings on wine purchases, up to four private wine tastings a year, complimentary custom branding on corporate gifts, priority access to events with preferred event pricing, concierge support and seasonal curated shipments tailored to your business.

Member events happen at our Costa Mesa venue: private tastings, seasonal dinners and other exclusive events, with preferred pricing for members. The wine concierge is our sommelier team, Arden, Margaux and Alyssa, and they get to know your palate over time.

Every plan comes with the same promise: "No commitments — free cancellation at any time." Questions go to club@argaux.com.

Is a wine club worth it?

It depends on whether you'll use what you pay for. A wine club is worth it when:

  • You'd rather have someone with a palate choose than scroll a shelf for twenty minutes.
  • You'll go to the events, ask the concierge your questions and try wines you wouldn't pick yourself.
  • You can skip, pause or cancel without fuss.

It's not worth it when you can't change or stop it, when the price per bottle doesn't hold up once shipping is added, or when you know you won't use the perks. A discount on wine you wouldn't have bought is not a saving.

Club Argaux fits best if you want a sommelier on your side and events to go to. If you live near us, a wine club in Costa Mesa comes with something a box in the mail can't: a room to taste in and people to talk to. If you want a different bottle every month, the Quarterly plan isn't that, and we'd rather tell you now.
