Stark-Condé is a family-run winery situated in the Jonkershoek Valley, a pristine location in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The winery’s origins are a blend of serendipity and a deep family legacy. Hans Schroder, the South African patriarch, and his Japanese wife, Midori Maruyama, returned to South Africa from Japan in the late 1980s, as apartheid was ending. They purchased Oude Nektar farm in 1989 and began growing grapes. Their eldest daughter Marie and her husband, Jose Conde, later joined them. Initially intending to open a graphic design studio, Jose discovered a passion for winemaking, leading to the creation of Stark-Condé.
Stark-Conde emphasizes organic farming and natural winemaking. Their vineyards range in elevation from 150m to 600m, which provides varied microclimates that contribute to the depth and complexity of the wines. Stark-Condé ferments their wines with natural yeasts, conduct manual punchdowns and usually do not fine or filter. This minimalist intervention approach ensures that the wines maintain their authenticity and express the character of their origins.
