The future of Loire Valley Chenin Blanc is in single vineyard, dry, terroir-driven whites that can compete with the best in the world for precision, length, complexity and ageability. Jacky Blot, and his son Jean-Philippe alongside, are currently making the wines of a lifetime. Ever since Jacky first purchased eight hectares of old vines in Montlouis in the late 1980s, he transformed and built up the domaine into one of the Loire’s finest addresses. The beautifully cared for sites are allowed to sing to their full potential, without sugar, without battonage, without malo, and minimal filtration. Jacky and Jean-Philippe Blot are without question one of the inspirational leaders of this growing movement.

“With François Chidaine, Jacky Blot has been instrumental in taking Montlouis out of Vouvray’s shadow and establishing for it a reputation of its own—and a better one at that. Much of what he has done appears old hat today, but it was revolutionary at the time: organic viticulture, hand harvests, wild yeasts, barrel fermentations and no malolactic conversions” –Vinous Media

CHENIN BLANC
A true chameleon of a grape, Chenin Blanc can take on many forms including lean, dry whites and fine sparkling wines to sweet, rich balanced brandy and sherry. It is grown in distant parts of the globe, most commonly South Africa and Loire Valley in France. Given its versatility, Chenin Blanc can produce some exquisite wine. Many of these wines offer an excellent quality-to-price-ratio (QPR) meaning you could be getting a great bang for your buck. Classic aromatics and flavors include quince, yellow apple, pear, chamomile, honey, and other florals and spices. A foolproof pairing: Thai or Vietnamese cuisine!

THE LOIRE VALLEY, FRANCE
The Loire is actually the largest river in France and the Loire Valley is a large region that follows as it flows towards the Atlantic. Another cooler climate region in France, the Loire Valley produces many exciting and exceptional red, rosé, and white wines in a variety of styles. Lean and lively white varieties like Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadet (Melon de Bourgogne or Melon Blanc) dominate in many sub-regions here including Anjou-Saumur, Touraine, and the Upper Loire (Centre). Rustic reds like Cabernet Franc, Gamay, and Côt (Malbec) are also grown in smaller areas. Some of the most infamous for Cabernet Franc are that of Bourgueil and Chinon located in the Touraine (Middle Loire). The Loire Valley is also known to produce quality sparkling wines from grape varieties including Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Franc (for rosé). You’ll often find these wines to be tart with fresh fruit flavors and labelled as Crémant de Loire.
