‘Gaux-To Provence: Our Travel Guide to France’s Sunny, Southeastern Region
Summer and Provence simply go hand in hand. Synonymous with sun-soaked days, turquoise-hued waters, and a seemingly endless supply of rosé, this serene French region is basically what dreams are made of—especially if visiting wine regions is up your alley. In honor of the summer months ahead, we’re highlighting this dreamy, southern French region—plus sharing all of our ‘gaux-to spots within it—here.
The Bigger Picture:
Provence is located in southeastern France, and is bordered by Italy and the Mediterranean Sea. Archaeological evidence shows that humans have inhabited modern-day Provence for over one million years, with more modern history dating back to the times of the ancient Romans and Greeks. The region’s many rivers, numerous mountain ranges, and seaside location have long made it a strategic place for humans to thrive. The region is home to multiple major cities, including its capital city of Marseille.
With regards to viticulture, France’s southern coast is mostly dominated by two main wine regions: Languedoc to the west and Provence to the east. Approximately 90% of Provence’s wine production is dedicated to rosé, though the region’s full-bodied reds and zesty, textured whites are equally not to be missed. A number of grape varieties are cultivated across the region, including Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Grenache, and Carignan for reds and Rolle (Vermentino), Grenache Blanc, and Clairette for whites.
How to Get There / Get Around:
No matter where in the world you’re coming from, getting to Provence is quite easy, though expect the journey to begin in Paris. If flying internationally, hop a connecting flight at Charles to Gaulle to Nice or Marseille—or even better, spend a few days in the City of Lights, then hop the high-speed train to the destination of your choice (or use it to connect via regional train to some of the smaller Provençal towns listed below).
