Abbazia di Novacella is one of the world’s oldest wineries, founded in 1142 by the Augustinian Order in the Isarco Valley of northern Italy. The Abbey functions as a self-sustaining community, farming grapes, apples, and vegetables, and operating a viticulture school alongside the winery.

The estate is renowned for exceptional, high-value white wines grown around Novacella. Steep, glacier-formed granitic schist soils and naturally low yields produce wines that are aromatic, fresh, and mineral-driven, made in a fully modern cellar despite the estate’s 850-year history.

Viticulture at Abbazia is rooted in centuries-old, organic farming practices. Although not officially certified due to the administrative demands of certification, the estate farms organically in practice, emphasizing biodiversity, soil health, and minimal intervention in both the vineyard and cellar. All harvesting is done by hand, allowing for careful selection of fruit and preserving the integrity of the grapes. These thoughtful, labor-intensive methods are central to the purity, balance, and longevity that define these wines.
