Although Cahors doesn’t always get the love it deserves, this historic French appellation’s roots run deep. A former commerce center during the Middle Ages, this southwestern French area became regarded for its inky, dark-hued wines, most of which were produced from the Tannat or Malbec (referred to as Cot locally) grapes. Clos la Coutale calls this medieval appellation home – and has since before the French Revolution!
Spearheaded by the dynamic Philippe Bernède, Clos la Coutale farms approximately 60 hectares of vines on the hillsides of the Lot river. Ideal exposure and ample daytime sunlight protect against frost, and the combination of clay and limestone soils creates a perfect home for cultivating Malbec and Merlot, the blend from which his flagship wine is made. Contrary to the Malbecs of Argentina, these dark-hued wines are rustic, ageworthy, and unbelievably food friendly, especially when savored along southwestern French cuisine. For your next steak frites or cassoulet at home, look no further than these historic and structured wines.
