2022 Sette Barbera d’Asti DOCG Nizza Monferrato
Arguably one of the softest and most elegant barberas I’ve ever had. Gino describes it as “naked Barbera,” a wine that he says reflects their unique environment. Fresh, vibrant and a joy to drink!
Biodynamic farming practice, native yeast fermentation and unfined/unfiltered
Gino della Porta & and renowned Barolo winemaker, Gianluca Colombo are the faces behind the Monferrato-based winery, Sette. Sette is dedicated to producing high-quality Barbera d’Asti wines. Their vineyard, located in Nizza Monferrato, spans five and a half hectares and produces incredible wine due to its unique advantages, such as diverse terroir with limestone, chalk, sandy limestone, and excellent climate conditions conducive to organic and biodynamic farming.
The goal of Sette is to produce wines that transcend cultural and regional expectations using ecological, organic, and biodynamic methods. Gino encourages experimentation to discover the true expression of their terroir, aiming to create “naked Barbera” that he says reflects their unique environment. Upon acquiring their vineyard, they found it heavily altered by chemical use for large-scale production. They refrained from any interventions in 2018 and 2019 to allow the vineyard to detoxify. Starting in 2019, their second season under organic cultivation, they planted cruciferous plants to regenerate the soil. Despite neighboring vineyards’ poor condition, their vineyard retains tall and fruit trees. Gino and Gian Luca plan to enhance biodiversity further by planting over forty regional trees, including fruit-bearing varieties, to recreate a more natural environment.
