Bernard Bohn has been crafting an individually unique style of wines since the young age of 18. After dropping out of Jesuit boarding school, Bohn enrolled in a winemaking program and took over his family estate, which happens to be rooted into the only outcrop of schist in all of Alsace. With three generations of know-how passed on from prior generations, Bernard, in conjunction with his son Arthur, are making some of the region’s most exciting wines from nine hectares of organically-farmed vines.
However, the Bohn farming mentality goes far beyond organics. Additionally, the family incorporates cover crops and encourages biodiversity amongst the vines, which they ultimately believe creates the greatest sense of balance in the vineyard. The family produces an impressive 30+ cuvées each year, which fall into two camps: classic Alsatian wines and the more natural-focused Par Nathur lineup. The division between the ‘typical’ and ‘natural’ range is completely fluid, as the typical wines receive minimal doses of SO2 (less than 1g at bottling) that would qualify as natural at most other domaines. Similarly, the family will often hold back a ‘Par Nathur’ wine for extensive aging – a practice generally executed on the traditional cuvées.
