Rooted in the hills of Santa Barbara County, Storm Wines meshes Old World influences with New World winemaking techniques in the heart of California. The Mediterranean climate, diverse soils, and exciting new opportunities in this budding Central Coast wine region have combined to drive Ernst’s passion for producing world-class wines that are fruit forward, refreshing, and reflective of the place from which they come.
After finishing his studies at Elsenburg Agricultural School in the Western Cape, Ernst Storm first came to Santa Barbara from South Africa in 2003. Although not very familiar with the area, he knew that he wanted to make classically-styled wines of focus and elegance. Today, Storm produces about 2,000 cases of small-production wines annually. Storm notes that if you can keep production small, you can treat every wine you make like it’s the only wine. This artisanal mentality and dedication to craft is one of the reasons we started Argaux in the first place, and it’s one of the reasons we’ve enjoyed working with Ernst for almost eight years now.
WHERE ARE WE AND WHAT ARE WE DRINKING?
The Central Coast of California stretches from Santa Cruz to Santa Barbara counties and includes regions like Santa Cruz Mountains, Monterey, Paso Robles, Santa Maria Valley, Santa Ynez Valley, and Sta. Rita Hills AVAs. This area produces excellent value wines across many grape varieties, with coastal AVAs favoring cooler-climate grapes like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, while warmer inland AVAs like Paso Robles excel with Syrah, Grenache, Zinfandel, and Rhône-style blends.
Grenache thrives in Santa Barbara County’s sun-drenched vineyards, where coastal breezes and diverse soils shape it into one of the region’s most exciting grapes for rosé. Naturally light in color and full of juicy red fruit character, Grenache is practically built for pink wine — delivering vibrant flavors of wild strawberry, watermelon, citrus zest, and rose petals. Santa Barbara’s cool nights preserve the grape’s refreshing acidity, while warm days coax out a generosity of flavor, making these rosés especially vivid and mouthwatering. The region’s dynamic microclimates, from the high-elevation Santa Barbara Highlands to the fog-kissed Sta. Rita Hills, allow winemakers to craft Grenache rosés that are energetic, expressive, and effortlessly drinkable — a true reflection of the laid-back yet sophisticated spirit of the California coast.
