Niepoort is a historic, family-owned winery founded in 1842 when Dutch merchant Franciscus van der Niepoort settled in Portugal’s Douro Valley. Initially known solely for Port, the estate evolved significantly in the late 20th century under Dirk van der Niepoort—representing the fifth generation—who began acquiring vineyards like Quinta de Nápoles and Quinta do Carril around 1987, establishing their own facilities in Vale de Mendiz, and pioneering dry, unfortified wines alongside their traditional Ports. Dirk’s adventurous spirit—encapsulated in his mantra “do little stupid things”—and his emphasis on sustainable, organic, and biodynamic vineyard practices have propelled Niepoort to the forefront of Portuguese innovation. Today, Niepoort operates across five Portuguese regions, offering a full range of fortified Ports (including Colheitas, Vintage, Tawny, and White Ports) and acclaimed still wines such as Redoma, Batuta, Charme, and Robustus— wines praised for their elegance, terroir expression, and Burgundian finesse. The sixth generation has now stepped in, with Dirk’s son Daniel joining the business in 2020, ensuring the continued blend of tradition, experimentation, and creative vision that defines Niepoort.
